Technical Policy Brief: The Economic Impacts of Climate Change and the Costs and Benefits of Adaptation in Europe

This technical brief released within the ACCREU Project, highlights early sector findings from the project, focusing on the economic costs of climate change in Europe and the costs and benefits of adaptation.
Across a range of key hazards and sectors, the ACCREU Project assesses potential economic impacts—alongside adaptation options, costs, and expected benefits—including: sea level rise, river flooding, agriculture and land use, labour productivity, health, energy use, and an initial look at wildfires.
Early results suggest climate-related damages in Europe could be substantial, on the order of hundreds of billions of Euros annually for these impact areas. They also indicate that adaptation can significantly reduce losses and deliver strong economic returns at comparatively low cost, even though some residual impacts remain.
