Cyprus is currently revising its national Climate Change Adaptation Strategy. Following a comprehensive study and broad stakeholder consultation, the revised strategy is about to be sent to the government’s Cabinet for approval. The European Commission, which supported financially the revision of the Strategy, organised a workshop on 13-15 October in Nicosia on “Enhancing disaster risk management and climate change adaptation in Cyprus”, in co-operation with the Cyprus Civil Defence Force and the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and the Environment of Cyprus.
Thanks to ACCREU, where the work of WP3 coincided with the revision of the adaptation strategy of Cyprus, Theodoros Zachariadis from the Cyprus Institute used this as a national case study in the frame of the project. He assessed the costs of all 119 measures of the revised adaptation strategy, estimated the fraction of the investment needs that must come from public funds, provided an assessment of the adaptation financing gap, and compared the costs of adaptation with the costs of inaction. His estimates will be included in the document to be sent to the Cabinet for the final approval of the adaptation strategy, hence he was invited to present his findings in the Cyprus workshop mentioned above.
