On 29 April 2026, the ACCREU project hosted a stakeholder workshop in Brussels to share findings from nearly three years of collaborative research. The workshop convened a group of representatives from industry, investment, policy and civil society, many of whom have been involved in the project from the start. Participants evaluated the new research on sectoral and macro-economic climate impacts and the economic viability of adaptation strategies.
The workshop focused on the project’s comprehensive assessment of costs and benefits of adaptation across various European sectors and regions. Notable sessions included:
- Sectoral Impacts: In small groups ACCREU research on sectoral costs of climate impacts and adaptation across different sectors, e.g. ecosystems, coast, wildfires, health, energy, was discussed.
- Economic Appraisal Case Studies: An interactive poster walk highlighted economic appraisals of diverse adaptation case studies and their related policy insights.
- Macroeconomic Assessment: A presentation by Birgit Bednar-Friedl (University of Graz) delved into ACCREUs integrated, macroeconomic analysis of climate risk and adaptation which accounts for the distributional, fiscal, and financial implications across households, sectors, and regions.
Additionally, project’s primary digital products: a Digital Handbook and a web-based Scenario Explorer was presented and feedback from participants gathered. The day concluded with a spotlight discussion on remaining research gaps and the formulation of policy messages.
This workshop marks a milestone for the ACCREU project, which began in June 2023 and is scheduled to conclude in November 2026. The exchanged reflections are intended to refine the final outputs and inform future European climate adaptation decision-making.
